Bonnyrigg kids get creative and collaborative with new book celebrating Darug culture

10 October 2022

Twenty four students from preschool to year 6 have had their stories published as part of Gulyangarri Gunyalungalung Children’s Dreaming, a book written and illustrated by Bonnyrigg Public School as part of the Bonnyrigg Kids Write project launched as part of Education Week.

The book is written in both English and the Darug language and was made possible thanks to a collaboration with community housing provider SGCH with support from Fairfield City Council Club Grants, with St Johns Park Bowling Club as the funding partner.

Rachel Nobile, Head of South West Sydney at SGCH was pleased her team could partner on such a great community project.

“This incredible short story Gulyangarri Gunyalungalung Children’s Dreaming, has been such a great partnership with Bonnyrigg public school”, says Ms Nobile.

“It was fantastic to be a part of this project and to watch the children flourish and be creative.”

Aboriginal Education Officers Ms Anderson and Miss Hair supported the children to share their stories and guided the project.

“It was very important for both of us to embed the Darug language into our culture program we offer at the school.  As a result our students are using Darug language every day in daily greetings and are eager to build on their understanding of the Darug language and history,’ explains Ms Anderson.

“We plan on building on this project to continue to provide students at Bonnyrigg Public School with opportunities to learn more about the Darug language and aim to create a future  that celebrates and recognises that we are the oldest living culture by Walking Together, Working Together”, said Ms Anderson.

This collaborative project highlights the importance of belonging in a community as diverse as Bonnyrigg. The funding included providing a book to all students, and local stakeholders. Gulyangarri Gunyalungalung Children’s Dreaming will also be available at the local libraries shortly.
