Eighty-eight-year-old SGCH customer Richard has recently been acknowledged for his 20-year volunteering contribution with a room named in his honour at his local community centre. A regular participant in St George Community Housing’s Move and Mingle classes, he enjoys the gentle exercise, the routine and, perhaps most importantly, the opportunity to socialise and spend time with others.
“Even though I’m 88, I love it,” Richard said. “I’ve even lost a bit of weight.”
Designed for people of different ages and abilities, Move and Mingle combines low-impact exercise with the chance to socialise. Participants improve their mobility and wellbeing while building friendships and staying engaged with fellow residents.
For fitness instructor Eleanor, those social benefits are just as important as the physical ones.
“We all want to make friends,” she said. “This group gives people a sense of belonging, and that’s important at every stage of life.”
Outside the classes, Richard has built strong relationships with neighbours in his apartment building. Over the years, a close-knit group has formed among residents on his floor, creating an informal support network based on friendship and care.
“The three of us look after one another and make sure everyone is okay,” he said. “We’re different ages, but we all get along really well.”
Through opportunities to stay active, supportive neighbours and the security of a long-term home, Richard continues to enjoy an independent and fulfilling life. If you’re also looking for ways to get active, feel great and be social, join us at Move and Mingle, or find a class near you!
