SGCH expands housing opportunities with 61 new apartments in Sydney’s inner west

SGCH has officially opened 61 new social and affordable apartments in Marrickville, marking its first development of the year, in its 40th year of operation. The new homes will support vulnerable communities including women aged 55 and over and individuals experiencing homelessness.
The Prime Minister, the Hon. Anthony Albanese officially opened the Marrickville project. “I want to congratulate St George Community Housing. This completes some 561 dwellings that SGCH is building under the Social and Affordable Housing Fund. We’re partnering with NSW on so many projects. Just here, there are 61 apartments, 48 for social housing, and 13 for affordable housing tenants.”
NSW Housing Minister the Hon. Rose Jackson said: “We love working with St George Community Housing. They’ve been long standing partners of the NSW government. They deliver excellent buildings. They deliver excellent tenancy services. Everyone’s got to get in this together.”

The opening of 35-41 Addison Road, Marrickville, celebrates the beginning of another decade of SGCH delivering homes for those in need. It also marks the completion of 261 homes delivered under the NSW Government’s Social and Affordable Housing Fund (SAHF) Phase 2, part of SGCH’s broader achievement of 561 homes across SAHF Phases 1 and 2. These contributions are part of more than 3,400 homes delivered through the NSW Government’s SAHF program.
When residents move into these new apartments, they will also gain access to SGCH’s dedicated support services, which connect them to health, financial, and educational resources while fostering empowerment and community wellbeing through local programs and events.
Delivered in partnership with IDC Properties and Tricon Building Group, this project demonstrates the transformative impact of public-private partnerships in addressing Australia’s pressing housing challenges. The building’s thoughtful design by Nordon Jago Architects offers residents spacious, bright, open-plan living, wide-set balconies, underground car parking, and a communal rooftop area overlooking Sydney’s vibrant inner west.
“This development exemplifies the power of public-private partnerships in delivering impactful solutions to housing challenges,” said Joe Achmar, Acting CEO, SGCH. “Together, we’re laying the foundation for high-quality housing that will provide safe and sustainable homes for generations to come.”
In addition to its aesthetic and functional appeal, the development achieves a high energy-efficiency rating of 7.2 NatHERS stars, thanks to sustainable design features such as double-glazed windows, passive ventilation and energy-efficient cooling systems.
“Our buildings are designed with resident comfort and affordability in mind. By creating peaceful spaces like the rooftop area and integrating sustainable elements, we help residents feel at home while reducing their living costs,” added Mr Achmar.
Located close to transport hubs, cafes, shops, and schools, this building is set to become home for at least 97 SGCH customers, with residents moving into their new apartments from January 2025.
